Types of Photography

Photography has been around for centuries and has greatly improved over the last several years. Photography, as we now know it, got its start in the 1820’s with what was called “permanent photographs” and then grew and developed into the many different types photography you see today.

The more you learn about photography the better you will be at taking photos and the easier it will be to decide which type of photographer you want to be. You have several choices to choose from depending on which one sparks your interest the most.

Here are a few examples of the different types of photography:

  • Portraits – Portraits are a special type of photography that captures and preserve the image of one or more people for many years. Family portraits are a great example of this type of photography.
  • Art Photography – Art photography records images on film as a method to display them in an artistic way for the world to view. It is one of the most creative ways to take photos.
  • Aerial Photography – Aerial photography is when photographs are taking from the air so you can get a unique view of the image you want from an angle that cannot be seen any other way. These photos are taken from planes, hot air balloons, helicopters, kites and even skydivers.
  • Sports Photography – This very challenging type of photography consist of the very best sport images you can imagine. It may be the hardest type of photography because it takes a lot of training to be able to capture athletes in action and still produce a crisp, clear photo.
  • Advertising – This type of photography requires expensive equipment and special lighting to achieve the desired results. You will need to go through some training to enhance your skills to be able to pursue advertising photography.
  • Documentary – Documentary photography is used as a method to record special occasions as they happen or as a way to tell a story about a specific person or event. These events may be photographed as they are happening for news purposes or as a record to be viewed at a later date.
  • Scientific Photography – Scientific photography involves taking photos for scientific purposes. Examples of this type of photography include photos of microscopic organisms, geology and astronomy just to name a few.

As you can see there are many types of photography to choose from so it will be easy to find a subject that interest you. If you are unsure of which type of photography you like the best, then you should do some research and learn more about what each one requires. This would include the training you need and how time consuming it would be to reach your goals. The more you learn about each type of photography, the easier it will be for you to make a good decision.
